Members of Operating Engineers, Local 501 rallied at a Douglas Emmett Inc.-sponsored clean water event in Santa Monica on October 3rd, 2017. The demonstration highlighted Douglas Emmett water violations and called for Area Standards – fair wages, benefits and working conditions – and respect for Engineers at Douglas Emmett-owned properties.
The DE-Sponsored Event
The DE-sponsored event, held across the street from the Douglas Emmett building, 100 Wilshire, was the annual fundraiser for the group LA Waterkeeper. Douglas Emmett executives serve on the board of LA Waterkeeper, and the group’s stated mission is to “protect and restore Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay, and adjacent waters through enforcement, fieldwork, and community action.”
DE Water Violations
Despite its affiliation with LA Waterkeeper, public records obtained by DE-Tenants.org reveal that Douglas Emmett has been flagged and penalized repeatedly by the California Water Resources Control Board for various violations.
Seven DE-owned buildings have committed 58 violations since 2012 and incurred 14 enforcement actions resulting in $510,000 in financial penalties since 2008.
